Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, visited China from March 26–29, 2025. He attended the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference in Hainan (26–27 March) and held official engagements in Beijing (27–29 March). The visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations and the Year of China-Bangladesh People-to-People Exchanges.
Prof. Yunus met Chinese President Xi Jinping in a warm, friendly atmosphere. President Xi recalled how Dr. Yunus’s microfinance model influenced his policy outlook during his leadership in Fujian Province. Additional high-level meetings were held with:

Total commitment: approx. $2.1 billion, of which:
~$1 billion is direct investment (not loans), from 30 Chinese companies.
Most focused on the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Anwara, Chattogram.
In addition, from August 2024 until now, 34 companies have committed $160 million in investments through BEPZA, reflecting growing investor confidence in Bangladesh’s export-oriented industrial potential.
12% of total package was non-repayable grants, approx. $250 million:
China designated 4 hospitals in Kunming for Bangladeshi patients.
Plan to build a dedicated hospital in Bangladesh.
Focus areas: robotic physiotherapy, cardiovascular surgery, and logistics.

Bangladesh invited Chinese participation in:

Agreement to hold future Maritime Cooperation Dialogues.
China reaffirmed support for a mutually acceptable repatriation framework between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Commended Bangladesh’s humanitarian role. Continued diplomatic and logistical support promised.
Bangladesh reaffirmed support for the One-China Principle. Recognized Taiwan as part of China.
China reiterated non-interference and support for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and national development.
Bangladesh positioned itself as a gateway to South and Southeast Asia, including Seven Sisters (India), Nepal, Bhutan.
Ongoing port developments: Matarbari Deep Sea Port and Bay Terminal in Chattogram to support regional trade.
Upcoming Investment Summit already has 96+ Chinese delegates registered.
In mid-April, China’s Director General of Commerce will lead a 15-company delegation to visit Anwara CEIZ.
Goal: deepen industrial investment in response to positive signals from President Xi.
Bangladesh emphasized the need for frequent visits and believes China will remain the largest source of long-term investment.
